Module Description:
This module explores sexuality through different stages of the life cycle, including adolescence, pregnancy and the postpartum period, menopause, and older age. The focus is on understanding changes in sexual health, behaviour, and experiences, as well as identifying specific challenges and therapeutic interventions. The module also addresses developmentally atypical sexual behaviours, providing participants with insight into diagnosis, prevention, and working with these phenomena.
The module includes:
- Sexual Health and Sexual Behaviour in Adolescence – psychosexual development of adolescents, the influence of social media and mass media, risky sexual behaviours, sexual education, and prevention.
- Sexual Health and Sexual Behaviour During Pregnancy and Postpartum – hormonal and emotional changes, partner adjustment, sexual dysfunction in the perinatal period, and postpartum depression.
- Sexuality and Menopause – physiological and psychological changes, sexual difficulties, the role of hormone therapy, and psychosocial factors affecting the sexual lives of women during menopause.
- Sexual Health and Difficulties in Aging – changes in sexual function among older adults, myths and realities of sexuality in later life, sexuality in nursing homes, and adaptation of therapeutic interventions.
- Developmentally Atypical Sexual Behaviours – identification and understanding of sexual behaviours that deviate from typical developmental patterns, causes, and clinical approaches to intervention and prevention.
Learning Outcomes:
Competencies
By the end of the module, students will be able to:
a) Understand psychosexual development across different life cycle stages and its impact on sexual health.
b) Recognise specific challenges in working with sexual problems of adolescents, pregnant women, menopausal women, and older adults.
c) Apply appropriate therapeutic interventions for sexual dysfunctions associated with particular life stages.
Knowledge
By the end of the module, students will acquire:
a) Knowledge of physiological, hormonal, and psychological changes affecting sexuality during adolescence, pregnancy, menopause, and older age.
b) Understanding of the influence of social norms, cultural factors, and gender expectations on sexual behaviour across different life stages.
c) Knowledge of the etiology and manifestation of developmentally atypical sexual behaviours and their treatment methods.
Skills
By the end of the module, students will develop:
a) The ability to clinically assess sexual health in individuals at different life cycle stages.
b) The skill to adapt therapeutic strategies when working with adolescents, pregnant women, menopausal individuals, and older adults.
c) Competence to address sexual problems specific to each life stage through a multidisciplinary approach.
Assessment of Knowledge and Competencies:
The module is assessed through:
– Task – Analysis of a clinical case of sexual changes across the life cycle.
– Presentation – Overview of literature and contemporary research on sexuality in a specific stage of life.
– Practical demonstration – Simulation of a clinical interview with clients from different age groups.
