Module Description:
This module provides a fundamental understanding of paraphilias and asexuality through a multidisciplinary approach that includes clinical, psychological, neurobiological, and sociocultural aspects. Special attention is given to distinguishing paraphilic interests from paraphilic disorders, considering their etiological factors, and the clinical and ethical implications in diagnosis and treatment. Simultaneously, the module explores asexuality as a sexual orientation, analysing its prevalence, diversity, social perceptions, and the psychological experience of individuals who identify as asexual.
The module includes:
- Definition, classification, and diagnostic criteria of paraphilias according to DSM-5 and ICD-11
- Differentiation between paraphilic interests, paraphilic behaviours, and paraphilic disorders
- Etiology and neurobiological foundations of paraphilic disorders
- Legal and ethical aspects of working with individuals exhibiting paraphilic behaviours
- Therapeutic approaches in working with paraphilic disorders (psychotherapeutic and pharmacological interventions)
- Differentiation between asexuality, hypoactive sexual desire disorder, and sexual aversion
- Different forms of asexuality (aromantic asexuality, demisexuality, gray asexuality)
- Psychosocial challenges faced by asexual individuals
- Therapeutic work with asexual individuals and their partners

Competencies:
By the end of the module, students will be able to:
a) Recognise and perform differential diagnosis of paraphilic disorders and asexuality.
b) Understand the etiology, development, and clinical manifestations of paraphilic disorders.
c) Apply appropriate therapeutic interventions when working with individuals with paraphilic disorders.
d) Critically analyse scientific research and ethical dilemmas related to paraphilias and asexuality.
e) Adopt an inclusive and affirming approach when working with asexual individuals.

Assessment of Knowledge and Competencies:
The module is assessed through:
– Written assignment – Clinical case analysis of a paraphilic disorder and/or asexuality
– Presentation – Overview of literature and research findings related to paraphilias and asexuality
– Practical demonstration – Simulation of a clinical interview and therapeutic approach
