Module Description:
This module provides a deeper understanding of the distinctions between sex, gender, and sexual orientation, and how they manifest in different social and cultural contexts. The module explores the complexity of the relationships between biological, psychological, and sociocultural aspects that shape human sexuality, with an emphasis on individual variations and diverse expressions of sexuality. Participants will gain deeper insight into the development of gender identity, the impact of emotions on sexual response, and phenomena such as sexual fantasies, masturbation, and non-coital and coital sexual activities.
The module includes:
- Sex and Gender – Biological, psychological, and social foundations of sex and gender; development of gender identity across the life cycle.
- Sexual Orientation – Development and variations of sexual orientation; legislation and sexual rights.
- Sexual Behaviour – Masturbation, non-coital and coital sexual activities, sexual fantasies, and their role in sexual expression.
- The Role of Emotions and Psychological States in Sexual Response – How anxiety, depression, guilt, fear, and shame can affect sexual function and satisfaction.
- Sexual Health and Sexual Difficulties in Men and Women – Overview of the most common sexual difficulties and their impact on quality of life and partner relationships.
- Sexual Behaviour and Spirituality – The relationship between spirituality and sexuality; exploring how different spiritual and religious perspectives shape sexual attitudes and behaviours.

Competencies:
By the end of the module, students will be able to:
a) Differentiate between the concepts of sex, gender, and sexual orientation and apply them in therapeutic work.
b) Analyse sexual behaviour through biological, psychological, and sociocultural lenses.
c) Understand the impact of emotions and psychological factors on sexual health and sexual responses.
Knowledge:
By the end of the module, students will acquire:
a) Knowledge of the development of gender identity and various sexual orientations in the context of individual development.
b) Understanding of psychological, sociological, and biological aspects of sexual behaviours.
c) Insight into how anxiety, depression, and other psychological factors can affect sexual life.
Skills:
By the end of the module, students will develop:
a) The ability to identify and analyse different gender and sexual identities in a therapeutic context.
b) Skills to recognise and understand the impact of emotional factors on sexual health.
c) The capacity to provide basic counselling on sexual health and identity in a professional setting.
Assessment of Knowledge and Competencies:
The module is assessed through:
– Written assignment – case analysis or critical essay on the topic of sexual behaviour and gender identity.
– Presentation – theoretical analysis of the influence of emotions and psychological factors on sexual response.
– Practical demonstration – case discussion and application of learned concepts through a simulated therapeutic approach.
