Module Description:
This module provides a fundamental understanding of sexual health through a multidisciplinary approach that includes sexology, sexual medicine, clinical sexology, and sexual therapy. The focus is on the historical development of the discipline, key research in the field of sexual health, and the basic principles of diagnosis and treatment of sexual dysfunctions. Therapists will become familiar with key theories of sexuality, medical and psychological models for treating sexual disorders, and the ethical aspects of sexual therapy.
The module includes:
- Historical Development of Sexology and Clinical Sexology – an introduction to scientific knowledge about sexuality and its impact on contemporary practice.
- Sexual Medicine – definition and development of sexual medicine as a medical specialty; European professional societies active in this field
- Clinical Sexology – definition and status of clinical (psycho)sexology; various approaches; the (non)existence of university programmes; organisation of professionals
- Sexual Therapy – defining boundaries; historical development of the profession
- Key Research in the Field of Sexual Health – the impact of scientific studies on the development of therapeutic methods.
Learning Outcomes
Competencies:
By the end of the module, students will be able to:
a) Understand the basic concepts and methodologies in sexology, sexual medicine, and sexual therapy.
b) Critically analyse key research in the field of sexual health and apply it in practice.
c) Identify ethical issues and apply relevant ethical guidelines.
Knowledge:
By the end of the module, students will acquire:
a) Basic theoretical knowledge in sexology, sexual medicine, and sexual therapy.
b) An understanding of medical and psychotherapeutic approaches to the treatment of sexual dysfunctions.
c) Insight into contemporary trends and challenges in clinical sexology.
Skills:
By the end of the module, students will develop:
a) The ability to analyse and interpret research in the field of sexual health.
b) The skill to recognise and understand sexual problems through an interdisciplinary approach.
c) The capacity to apply ethical standards and professional guidelines in sexual therapy and counselling.
Assessment of Knowledge and Competencies
The module is assessed through:
– Presentation – clinical case analysis in the context of sex therapy.
– Presentation – review of literature and key research in sexology.
– Discussion – evaluation of ethical challenges in practice.
