Module Description:
This module provides an overview of key developmental theories and relationship theories that form the foundation of psychotherapeutic work with children and adolescents. The focus is on understanding cognitive, emotional, social, and psychosexual development, alongside analysing the factors that shape the child’s relationships with primary caregivers and the environment.
Special emphasis is placed on the contributions of the following theoretical approaches and authors:
- Attachment Theory (John Bowlby, Mary Ainsworth)
- Psychodynamic Developmental Models (S. Freud, A. Freud, Donald Winnicott, Margaret Mahler, Melanie Klein)
- Neuroaffective Development (Allan Schore, Daniel Stern)
- Interpersonal and Intrasubjective Theories
- Systemic and Relational Approaches in Child Development
Learning Outcomes:
Competencies
By the end of the module, students will be able to:
a) Analyse and apply developmental theories in the assessment and therapeutic work with children and adolescents.
b) Critically understand the factors shaping developmental processes and the child’s relationships with the environment.
Knowledge
By the end of the module, students will have acquired:
a) Knowledge of fundamental developmental theories and their significance for psychotherapeutic practice.
b) Understanding of key concepts such as attachment, separation, self-development, and emotional regulation.
c) The ability to connect theoretical concepts with real developmental processes in children and adolescents.
Skills
By the end of the module, students will develop:
a) The ability to recognise developmental patterns and relational dynamics in clinical work with children and adolescents.
b) The integration of developmental theories into the formulation of therapeutic plans and the assessment of the child’s needs.
