Module Description:

This module provides an introduction to the historical foundations and theoretical approaches in integrative psychotherapy for children and adolescents. It familiarises students with key ideas and directions that have influenced the development of psychotherapy, including:

  • Existentialism and phenomenology,
  • Psychoanalysis,
  • Gestalt psychology,
  • Neuroscientific approaches,
  • Systemic and humanistic theories,
  • Ethics, human rights, and social responsibility in working with children and adolescents.

Learning Outcomes:

Competencies
By the end of the module, students will be able to:
a) Analyse the theoretical foundations underlying different approaches in child and adolescent psychotherapy.
b) Independently research the literature on the development and application of integrative psychotherapy with children and adolescents.

Knowledge
By the end of the module, students will have acquired:
a) An understanding of the historical foundations and development of integrative psychotherapy and its application in psychotherapy with children and adolescents.
b) Familiarity with the sources and theories that have shaped contemporary psychotherapeutic modalities in the therapeutic process with this population.
c) Knowledge of key authors and pioneers of psychotherapy in the context of working with children and adolescents.

Skills
By the end of the module, trainees will develop:
a) The ability to understand how philosophical, psychological, and neuroscientific approaches have influenced the development of psychotherapy for children and adolescents.
b) Knowledge of the fundamental principles on which integrative psychotherapy for children and adolescents is based and its application in accordance with developmental stages and individual characteristics.

Assessment of Knowledge and Competencies:

The module is assessed through:
– Written assignment
– Oral presentation in a small group
– Answering two questions inspired by the written assignment and the presentation
